Tensions Escalate as India Launches Air Strikes in Pakistan and Kashmir's
In response to late-night air strikes carried out by India on six targets—including Sialkot and Bahawalpur in Punjab, as well as locations in Azad Jammu and Kashmir—the Pakistani military has reportedly shot down five Indian fighter jets.
The confrontation was first reported in the early hours, and was later confirmed by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the official media wing of the Pakistani military. ISPR stated that the Indian air strikes were launched from within Indian airspace, targeting Pakistani territory under the cover of darkness. The strikes, which occurred during the night, prompted a swift retaliatory response from the Pakistan Air Force.
By around 4 a.m., the ISPR released a preliminary statement outlining the consequences of the Indian offensive. According to the military's early damage assessment, eight civilians lost their lives as a result of the air strikes. The statement emphasized that the casualties occurred in residential areas and condemned what was described as an unprovoked act of aggression by the Indian military.
Pakistan's military response reportedly involved the deployment of air defense systems and fighter aircraft, leading to the downing of five Indian jets, although this claim has not yet been independently verified. ISPR noted that defensive actions were taken in accordance with established rules of engagement and aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty.
Tensions remain high between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, and both sides have issued statements accusing the other of violating territorial integrity. The situation is being closely monitored by international observers concerned about the potential for further escalation. As of now, military officials have stated that additional assessments are underway to determine the full extent of the damage and to prepare for any further developments.
