India Launches Operation Sindoor in Response to Pahalgam Terror Attack; Civilian Casualties Reported Along LoC
In the early hours of Wednesday, May 7, India initiated a major counter-terror operation, codenamed Operation Sindoor, targeting nine locations across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The precision strikes began at 1:44 am and were launched in direct retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, most of whom were tourists.
The operation marks a significant escalation in India’s response to cross-border terrorism. According to official sources, the targets included key militant infrastructure and training camps believed to be responsible for orchestrating attacks on Indian soil.
Following the strikes, the Pakistan Army retaliated with heavy mortar shelling along multiple sectors of the Line of Control (LoC). The shelling, which reportedly targeted civilian areas, resulted in the deaths of at least 10 civilians and left over 20 others injured. Several homes and public buildings were damaged in the barrage, prompting emergency evacuations in vulnerable border villages.
Local authorities have begun relocating residents from high-risk zones to temporary shelters, while hospitals in the region have been placed on high alert to manage the influx of injured civilians. Indian security forces along the LoC remain on heightened alert amid concerns of further escalation.
While New Delhi has yet to issue a formal statement detailing the full scope of Operation Sindoor, defense officials have described the mission as “precise and necessary.” The Ministry of External Affairs is expected to brief the media later today.
As the situation develops, both nations face increasing pressure from the international community to de-escalate tensions and avoid further civilian harm.
